Polish Partner                                                Friday, 13 November 2009

Dabrowa Gornicza is a fairly big city located in the South-West of Poland in the region of Upper Silesia. The area is mainly industrial. The population of the city is about 150 000 people but together with the neighbouring cities it forms the most populated urban agglomeration not only in  the region but also in the country. Until the 1990s the city developed, benefiting from mining, iron and steel industry. Unfortunately, economic changes resulted in closing the majority of coal mines, steel mills and different manufacturers in the region. It was followed by a rapid growth of unemployment  that can even increase because of the economic crisis in Poland.  The unemployed are on average 40-50 years old, with technical or  secondary education, who came from different parts of Poland to live in the region of D±browa Górnicza in search for work and accommodation. However, more threatening is the fact that  current secondary school and university  graduates are endangered by unemployment due to the city’s economic stagnancy. Our students’ families often experience such situations. It happens that one or even two of the parents are unemployed, often without any right for unemployment benefit. It results in emigration of a parent , or both parents in order to find a source of financial support for the family. Such parents leave their children Euro-orphans in Poland and during their absence grandparents and older siblings take care about them. Despite the disadvantageous economic situation our school belongs to the group of the best schools in the region, and our students achieve numerous successes both in the country and abroad.I Liceum Ogolnokszta³cace im. Waleriana £ukasinskiego in Dabrowa Gornicza  is a coeducational secondary school for 16-19-year-old students. We are a school with an over 100-year-long tradition. In the beginning the school functioned as a merchant school for girls. After the second world war the school became a secondary comprehensive public school. At present our education offer provides extended courses of history and law, biology and chemistry, science, humanities and languages.

Throughout the participation in the project we wish to give our students the opportunity to find out about some other culture, tradition and mentality. For young people born and brought up in a monocultural and monoreligious country, it might be the only way to teach tolerance and understand other nations. As English, most frequently taught second language in our schools, is  the project communication language, the participation in the project will be strongly motivating to develop language skills both for the students and the teachers engaged in the project activities. Considering the fact, that the final product of the project will be, among others, a complex website, we are going to expand our knowledge and develop our skills in the field of multimedia and information technology. With no doubt will such abilities improve the chances of our students on the job market of high standard expectations, both in the country and abroad. During the project tasks fulfilment the students will be able to develop creative thinking, the ability of working in groups, presentation and long term planning, which is going to become their strong point in future work. Moreover, for some of our students participation in the project will be the first and only opportunity to meet people of different culture, tradition and customs in person.

Maturity Ball                                                 Tuesday, 05 January 2010

Picture
On the 30th of January there is a big, big day for our third class students. It's Saturday and on this special day they are having their great Maturity Ball to which they have invited their teachers and boyfriends or girlfriends. The ball will be held in a fine dancing hall hired especially for this occasion. Everyone will be wearing formal clothes: boys in suits and ties and girls in smart evening desses usually in black, graphite, purple or navy blue with their hair trimmed by stylists and star make - ups on their faces. Also the major and our parliament deputies and local politicians are inated to the ball. The event is initiated with a traditional Polish dance - polonise- and every year there is a polonaise contest for all the secondary schools organised by the hall owners. Of course to make a good impression and to look like professional dancers our students practice a lot trained by our P.E. teachers as the dance itself is quite complicated. We are proud to say that we've been winners a few times. After the dance it's time to start a reception which goes on until the break of dawn. And this is the event in our school calendar which we want our partners to participate in as the best way is to experience its exceptional atmosphere on your own. Just to show you a small sample we present pictures taken during the last Maturity Ball held in 2009
